The AI Goldrush: How Do I Make Money off Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning?

We’re on the verge of the artificial intelligence (AI) gold rush. And just like past gold rushes that have occurred in the past, a minority of players will make money from finding the gold. Yet, many more will become wealthy by living off the miners with food, supplies, and services.

Corporate innovation centers, startups, and incumbent tech companies have started using AI and machine learning to solve real business problems in domains such as enterprise asset management, procurement, contract management, supply chain management, and across industries such as manufacturing, consumer packaged goods, health care, transportation, energy, and nearly every other industry beyond high tech. The profound transformation for knowledge workers and professionals will be that AI and machine learning doesn’t do their job, but rather, humans will decide when to tell machine learning to do the work. This is a prime example of the human component of machine learning and the importance of creativity when machine learning is in play.

By 2020, experts predict that 50 billion things will become connected to the internet. To put this in perspective, that means nearly seven connected things for every person on the planet. Current predictions are that $19 trillion of value will be created as billions of things, data, business processes, and people become connected.

There will of course be success stories from companies that pan for gold and strike it rich. But the real economic growth will come to those selling the picks, shovels, and jeans equivalents for AI and machine learning.

Healthy Leader, Healthy Team

Focus on your personal human performance to better serve and lead your organization. Leaders set the tone of an organization. Their behavior and leadership style set the conditions for success or failure. Learn how a focus on your personal human performance can help you better serve and lead your organization. We will discuss cutting-edge research on mindfulness, nutrition, physical fitness, sleep, and human connection; specifically, how self-love and teamwork are foundational to effective leadership. We will also discuss ideas for developing a high-performing culture using evidence-based human performance initiatives.

Know Yourself. Lead Yourself. Lead Others.

Effective leadership is grounded in trust. However, you have to build relationships with those you lead and work with in order to facilitate a culture of trust…and it starts with having a relationship with yourself. You have to know yourself in order to lead yourself; a necessary first step before leading others. Learn how to use a two-pronged, relationship-based approach for being an effective leader. Rooted in a love of self, you must first develop a relationship with YOU. Who are you? What is it that you value? What is your philosophy in life, and thus, your leadership? Second, you need to develop a deeper relationship with those around you. Who are they? What is it that they value? Learn how to deepen these relationships through exercises and affective learning so that you can be a high-performing, trusted, and effective leader.

Digital Innovation: The Kryptonite for Digital Disruption

This session will stretch your thinking about the value and impact of digital supply chains and their implications the supporting innovative technologies have for enterprise asset management. In order to respond to the voice of the customer, we must enable and leverage the “voice of the product.” Emerging digital innovations afford organizations an opportunity to give their assets and products a voice. If you've wondered about the "Amazon effect" and/or “Uberization” and how they’re affecting customers’ and employees’ expectations and behaviors, this is the session for you. This session will highlight three common approaches to digital disruption and present the two most common approaches to implementing a digital strategy, as well as what's needed to make them successful.

What’s It Really Like? A Customer’s Perspective on SAP Technology

It can be easy to get lost in the buzz and hype around new technology, or even to get a little cynical about what it can really do. In this session, cut through the noise and get straight answers about SAP’s technology from a customer who knows what it’s like to use it. Tom Bales of Newport News Shipbuilding sits down with Patrick Crampton-Thomas of SAP in an interview about what new technology has to offer and how it can have a real impact on your organization. Moving past hypotheticals, Tom and Patrick will dive into the real, lived experience of SAP users just like you.

Enabling the Intelligent Enterprise: SAP Supply Chain and Asset Management Strategy for Digital Transformation

This keynote will highlight key observations from SAP customers, what changes they are having to respond to in the market, and key approaches and initiatives to transform and gain competitive advantage.

Hear how SAP is helping customers establish a digital platform across design to operate business processes and adding intelligence for improved decision support and automation. This will include a deeper dive in the areas of digital business planning, digital logistics, and digital assets.

Johnsonville: Reducing Downtime Through Work Prioritization and Integrated Planning and Scheduling

With the lack of a robust scheduling tool in SAP, the team at Johnsonville consistently found themselves facing challenges with planning and scheduling work effectively. This included doing so without visibility to labor capacity or to production lines that were not available, while also completing certain work orders in an unprioritized way, leading to unplanned downtime when less critical work was completed first. The team determined that a system was needed that could integrate with SAP to provide this functionality and support a better maintenance process.

With a tool selected to provide great visibility and that filled the functional gaps in the desired process, a cross-functional team of operations and maintenance members worked together to design a work order weighting system that all agreed with and helped ensure that the right work is prioritized and completed helping to minimize unplanned downtime.

In this session you will learn from Johnsonville Sausage’s personal experience in:

• Creating maintenance plans for running and nonrunning maintenance operations

• Creating a work order weighting structure that can be applied to work orders to ensure the right work is being completed

• Scheduling of work orders effectively

• The need to select a software that will support the short-term and long-term needs of the organization

Key Business Benefits:

• Better able to schedule work without impacting operations

• Better prioritization of work orders, reducing unplanned downtime

• Better visibility and agreement between maintenance and operations on business process and priorities

EAM Journey at Norfolk Southern: Turning Vision into Reality

Norfolk Southern (NS) faces the same key business challenges related to asset management as many asset-intensive industries. Specifically, lack of standard business processes, limited visibility of TCO of an asset, disparate systems and technologies lacking data integration, warranty management, spare parts and inventory management, and desired capability to run the business. Further, to harness the power of emerging digital technologies, conventional maintenance management systems and business processes do not deliver and require paradigm shifts. NS is embarking on an EAM journey with the vision to build enterprise-wide, best-in-class solutions that can be leveraged and adopted by various asset classes, with SAP as the primary technology.

Our core principle is “Build once… deploy many times.” Design thinking principles guide our user-centric design methodology to develop solutions that are intuitive and optimize the user experience. NS will share our targeted business benefits, including maximize asset reliability, availability and utilization, and improve operational efficiencies and inventory optimization. NS will share its EAM vision, journey, lessons learned, and how you can leverage SAP technology for your organization.

Key Business Benefits:

  • Business process standardization

  • Asset health measures, improving maintenance practices

  • Lower TCO for technology supporting EAM

Puget Sound Energy’s Journey Implementing an Integrated Work Management Solution

Puget Sound Energy (PSE) is an energy company serving Washington state for over 135 years. The company is currently working to enhance the customer experience in order to be the energy partner of choice for its customers. To better serve the external customers, PSE also had to focus on providing its internal customers (people who initiate, plan, schedule, execute, and close work) with state-of-the-art technology and processes.

PSE implemented SAP in the 1980s and has been using the SAP Work Manager and SAP Plant Maintenance solutions ever since. All these years, the focus has been on using notifications to track both scheduling and field execution of work with work orders being the financial tracker. This leads to various problems, such as supporting a non-standard solution, not leveraging industry best practices, having a lot of notification and order types (more than 40 and 170 respectively), multiple work orders to execute a single job, etc.

The Integrated Work Management (IWM) project aims at implementing new applications such as ClickSchedule and SAP Work Manager along with modifying existing applications such as SAP and PowerPlan in order to move to a more industry-wide standard EAM solution. The challenge in front of PSE was how to implement IWM within time and budget allocated without having to completely modify the solution that has been working for the past 20 years. Additional challenges were ensuring that the solution was well integrated with other transformation projects and business processes were defined, keeping the end customer experience in mind and also thinking long term with respect to IT strategy.

Join us to understand how PSE worked on rolling out the solution to one of its business units by consolidating the number of order types and implementing new software components such as ClickSchedule, SAP Work Manager, OpenText, etc. We will cover details around what was implemented, challenges faced, lessons learned, and benefits reaped.

Key Business Benefits:

• Moving the organization to an electronic work management process as opposed to existing paper-based processes

• Increase in productive work time due to automated order creation and scheduling

• Quick turnaround time to respond to customer issues and easy access to work status as opposed to having to make numerous calls to determine the status of work

Leveraging Standard SAP with a Custom Twist

Budgets are tight. Improvements to systems in the name of planning and scheduling are constantly looked at with a pessimistic eye. Organizations entering the world of planning and scheduling are often quickly overwhelmed by the complex nature of capacity planning, how operations within the task list relate with each other, and how to make meaningful reports with the data they collect. There are many outstanding third-party applications which help with this but often rely on an already-established process (not just in Visio or a specification but followed religiously). They assume you are already doing some planning and scheduling, and they also require upfront cost, usually with transports.

Is it possible to build something in a few weeks that can interface with SAP, interactively represent a schedule, get people excited about planning and scheduling, while following your current state, provide a solid metric to help track progress, all for free? Join Chris Carver in this exciting session to see what GlobalFoundries has done.

Key Business Benefits:

  • Planning and scheduling

  • Cost savings

  • Process improvement

From Miserable BoMs to Visual BoMs at Shell Upstream Deepwater Gulf of Mexico

Shell Upstream Deepwater Gulf of Mexico has consistently received feedback that we need to improve our bills of materials (BoMs) to ensure we get the right parts offshore at the right time. Significant man-hours are consumed to research, validate, and order parts for maintenance activities. Inaccuracies in the current material master records (MMRs) and BoMs cause delays, rework, and poor-quality repairs that can result in unnecessary facility maintenance spend, production deferment, and/or regulatory attention. End users have little confidence in existing MMRs and BoMs and often defer to purchasing generic material specified by vendors, sometimes without an outline agreement. But how bad is it? Here are a few statistics:

  • As many as 70-80 percent of all MMRs are inaccurate or duplicated.

  • Over 20 percent of all MMRs have no manufacturer listed.

  • Over 20 percent of all MMRs have no manufacturer part number.

The result is BoM usage hovering around 5-10 percent. So, what is the path forward?

A zero-based BoM project was piloted on one of our offshore platforms. The pilot was designed to incorporate three distinct phases…build, fix, and sustain. The scope of the BoM project includes:

  • Creation of complete and accurate BoMs for centrifugal pumps and some non-solar compressors

  • Creation of an illustrated parts book (visual BoMs) for applicable equipment

  • Adoption of a BoM sustainment program

While the pilot is still underway, thus far the visual BoMs have been very well received by our end users (maintenance planning team members and technicians). It takes the guesswork out of ordering materials and will definitely help eliminate rework and increase maintenance planning efficiency. Over the past three months, we have created illustrated parts catalogs for 35 pumps and one compressor.

CenterPoint’s “Insight-to-Action” Development with SAP PdMS

Breakfast Session: Doing Mobile the Right Way for Plant Maintenance

Everyone is talking about workflow automation. Industries across the globe are reaping huge benefits from automation, and plant maintenance is no exception. Doing mobile the right way is critical to cut costs, reduce errors, increase productivity, and build ROI. Mobile is more than just data capture—it paves the path of the digital highway that your entire workflow will run through.

In this session, sponsored by Sigga, Dieterle Digital will discuss how they have been able to process two million orders per year, increase technician productivity by 15%, reduce MTTR by 75%, increase MTBF by 10%, eliminate paper and second data entry, reduce time sending work orders to technicians by 99% and more by doing mobile the right way. This session will also cover more benefits and components of mobility done right, how to choose the right device, how to drive ROI, and how to move you closer to the perfect plant and predictive maintenance.

I AM San Diego: An Enterprise Framework for Sustainable Asset Management

Join the City of San Diego to learn how it integrated SAP EAM with PowerPlan’s Asset Investment Optimization solution to create a citywide strategic asset management plan. First, 28 legacy systems and 19 separate applications were consolidated into a fully integrated solution that provides a comprehensive and up-to-date inventory of the city’s infrastructure assets. Next, the city put the data to work, developing long-range capital investment plans with actual and forecasted lifecycle event costs. This data-driven approach has brought transparency and objectivity to the planning process, allowing San Diego to mitigate the risk of aging infrastructure and deferred maintenance backlogs.

Attendees of this session will learn about some of the challenges the city faced and lessons they can bring back to their organizations, including how to develop a business case for a transformative organizational project.

Key Business Benefits:

Maintenance Business Transformation at CNOOC (Previously Nexen Energy)

An effective end-to-end maintenance process is a cornerstone of a safe, reliable, and efficient plant operation. In early 2017, several disparate business-led initiatives were being kicked off to improve performance of the Oil Sands business, specifically its costly maintenance processes from initial notification to execution and closeout of work.

The SAP Solution Centre (SSC) within CNOOC saw an opportunity to partner with Oil Sands to manage these initiatives under one umbrella. The Maintenance Continuous Improvement Program (MCIP) was created as a result, and the journey would continue over the next one and a half years.

All aspects of people, streamlining business process, system enhancements/automation, reporting, sustainment, and benefits realization were in scope.

Furthermore, the entire design to implementation was achieved using only internal resources while maximizing standard SAP functionalities.

Accordingly, the MCIP was really a maintenance business transformation exercise to improve the efficiency, safety, and profitability of the Oil Sands business.

The end-to-end maintenance lifecycle was dissected one process block at a time using an agile project management approach. The SAP/IT team would facilitate lengthy discussions on current challenges, improvement opportunities, and industry best practices with the core project team. The to-be state would be refined several times before going to the Oil Sands leadership team for final review and approval.

In the end, the MCIP has established a framework of best practices across the maintenance lifecycle. Several benefits such as greater productivity, efficiency, reduced costs, and safety risks have already been realized.

Key Business Benefits:

  • Clear definition of roles, responsibilities, and accountabilities, eliminating gray areas

  • Creation and publishing of maintenance schedule 14 days (T-2) before actual execution date, giving each stakeholder enough time to get prepared for the execution and achieving more than 70 percent schedule compliance

  • Merging of four different notification types into one to simplify the work request process

  • Automatically populate notification priority and Maintenance Activity Type (MAT) based on RAMP (Risk Assessment Matrix Prioritization) criteria

  • Innovating troubleshooting concepts to address minor issues quickly that don’t require planning and scheduling resources, thus allowing planners to focus time on complex and longer-term jobs

  • Introducing a Latest Acceptable Completion Date (LACD) concept that establishes an agreed upon due date for repair, setting expectations for support groups via sub LACD’s and getting all stakeholder groups to work directly in SAP

Moving Beyond “Standard” SAP to Reduce Business Pain Points

We’ve all heard the complaints:

  • SAP is too complicated.

  • SAP requires so much training.

  • Getting the information I need is too difficult.

In 2017, Owens Corning formed the Enterprise Asset Management Technology Platform and began gathering pain points from business units. The lengthy list of pain points was prioritized, and it began experimenting with small-scale proofs of concept to prove out possible solutions. Today, it has moved several of the proofs of concept to full-scale deployment to its 70-plus facilities on SAP Plant Maintenance. These include a new document management system, work identification portals, Power BI-based reporting system, and a technician-oriented SAP Fiori® app. The EAM platform now tracks business benefits from these projects to fund additional proofs of concept and improvement projects consistent with the rolling three-year road map.

Come hear how Owens Corning organized its platform, got traction on some initial projects to achieve quick wins, and then sustained that energy by continuing to improve and roll out new projects.

Key Business Benefits:

  • Significantly improved quantity and quality of work requests and notifications

  • Increased SAP usage and utilization in plant maintenance

  • Increase in quality planned work in the backlog

Fit for “Our” Purpose Road Map: Making Simple, Yet Significant Change for Business Benefits

Most SAP journeys start out with a period of significant change as the business learns a new system and comes to terms with more integrated processes. Implementation focuses on process and data with little time dedicated to user experience. Three years into Glencore Coal’s SAP journey, the business was comfortable with SAP. However, there was still significant scope for improving user engagement and efficiency.

Having already invested substantially in SAP ERP Central Component, it was important that the solutions would use tools that the organization already owned and could develop itself. Improvements needed to be made without a move to SAP HANA®, SAP S/4HANA®, or required further investment in additional third-party solutions.

Glencore Coal’s next steps were based on a deep dive into its users’ needs and then designed to three core principles: engagement, efficiency, and reinforcing business process.

This session will provide insights on the steps taken:

  • Conducting a company-wide survey to gain insights into user pain points and role-based needs

  • Developing simplified screens in SAP without customizing SAP transactions, upgrades, or testing burden

  • Developing custom dashboards and screens tailored to supervisors’ needs

  • Overcoming technical challenges with SAP Screen Personas

  • Future opportunities for SAP Screen Personas for asset management

Hear practical examples demonstrating how top-down design thinking has provided a path to incremental, user-focused changes. Most notably, these efforts resulted in a 50 percent reduction in transaction time, translating to $500,000-plus of opportunity time back for front-line supervisors at Glencore Coal.

Right Information, Right Person, Right Time

At Glencore Coal Australia, the largest thermal coal producer in the world, Colin Kirkwood is the asset manager for 15 operating coal mines with an annual maintenance spend of over $1 billion. Having a diverse and dispersed array of assets—from underground fixed assets to excavators to a truck fleet of over 450 vehicles—means Glencore requires asset performance metrics that work across different operating contexts. Largely due to the high level of complexity, Colin has developed many strategies and methods for insuring that the right information gets to the right person at the right time. In this presentation, Colin will share the asset management framework used at Glencore to meet his mission to guarantee that “Each organizational level and function has timely access to relevant, up-to-date asset management reports upon which effective decisions are made.”

Key Business Outcomes:

  • Multi-tiered KPI sets for end uses in maintenance, asset performance, condition, and total asset performance

  • Clear visibility from plant floor workers up through leadership teams

  • Road map for visualization tools to increase usability of data

Smarter Data Management for Your Enterprise Asset Data

Data is your company’s most valuable asset, but ensuring master data integrity is a key challenge across all industries, especially those counting on it to help maximize asset uptime, optimize materials inventory, and streamline operations. Your data should fuel trusted cross-functional analytics to drive performance management and business decision-making, so you need to be able to integrate structured data, unstructured content, engineering systems, and machine data captured by the Internet of Things to create one golden record of truth.

To stay operationally efficient, you must base plant and equipment management decisions on data you can trust. With SAPs Master Data Governance, enterprise asset management extension by Utopia and SAP Asset Information Workbench by Utopia, you can create and manage asset master data in the plant maintenance process centrally. The result: effective asset lifecycle management that allows you to leverage accurate master data to anticipate regular maintenance needs, keeping parts handy for necessary repairs, and demonstrating compliance with safety guidelines. Increased visibility into asset lifecycles and raw material usage helps tighten IT resource planning and identify and correct potential risks to product quality or hazardous practices before they degrade performance or profitability.

This workshop will cover:

  • Elimination of inaccuracies and omissions in master data for asset management

  • Improving the quality of information for managing the asset lifecycle

  • Speeding up the transition between build and operational phases for assets

  • Reducing downtime due to maintenance issues

Connecting your Workforce with a Mobile Solution for EAM, Inspections, Checklists and Rounds

Your enterprise depends entirely on your field or plant workforce to safely and effectively service and operate a complex, distributed, and always live asset base, in typically remote or hard-to-reach places and dangerous environments.  Most large asset intensive companies operate with a workforce still relying on paper based processes to promote collaboration, communications and transaction recording between planners, schedulers, technicians, inspectors, supervisors, warehouse operators, back office and executives. In this scenario just another Mobile solution isn't enough.

Leading asset-intensive companies have adopted a platform approach to combine core business process that were previously managed in disparate systems. Learn how the Innovapptive Connected Workforce platform combines field-ready business applications for EAM, Asset Inspections, Checklists and Operator Rounds that can run on any mobile device.

In this session learn how Zinfra and Jemena chose the Innovapptive Connected Workforce Platform as the core component of their workforce mobility program solution. Implemented in just three months, the solution which included mWorkOrder for Mobile EAM and RACE™ Dynamic Forms for field inspections and checklists, enabled the replacement of numerous paper forms with digital forms. Exploring the Synergies of Maintenance and Procurement Systems

Procurement and maintenance departments alike have pressures and competing priorities that keep planners and buyers very busy. These groups need to communicate closely but both are consumed by meetings, time away from the desk field planning, and time on the phone with vendors, making this task sometimes a big challenge. This presentation will highlight some of the common information that is readily available to exploit by planners and buyers alike. SAP makes the task of keeping informed without talking or dropping by an office while providing simple historical review of procurement and warehouse activities from a maintenance perspective. The presentation will walk through some of the common means of doing just that in additional to looking at ways to enhance your reporting.

MRP: Inventory Management and Work Management Integration

Inventory management and material requirements planning (MRP) utilization are truly dependent on each other. Almost 10 years on SAP and we have realized that MRP driven-demand planning and forecasting continue to feed and impact optimal inventory management techniques. The challenges and business expectations to maintain the right inventory mix at optimal costs to support projects has grown exponentially in the utility industry. It is to be noted that SAP Plant Maintenance work order data quality is a critical contributing factor to MRP in support of best inventory management methodologies, along with MRP materials master data such as lead times, safety stock, and vendor performance.

As Southern California Edison continues its tech journey down the path to SAP S/4HANA®, in collaboration with our work management teams, we refreshed our strategies within IPSEC model when it came to materials master data governance and data quality. We began to start using SAP to effectively manage all our materials master data, MRP settings, procurement, vendors, transmission and distribution (T&D) field needs, and any other discipline that we required. We have made minor business and technology custom enhancements to support better inventory management techniques.

In this presentation, I will take you on the journey that we took to get to a place that has set us up for an environment where we use data management as a strength and to its competitive advantage by integrating with work management to save inventory carrying costs with elevated focus on inventory and vendor management.

Key Business Benefits:

  • Forecasting of long lead, single, and sole source materials within bills of material (Initiate)

  • Accurate MRP demand signals by closing unwanted reservations (Plan)

  • Material recirculation within the network locations to minimize stock outs (Schedule)

  • Better management of safety stocks, MRP settings, and vendors (Execute)

  • Advanced perfect line rate (PLR) management (Close and Effectiveness)

Key Business Benefits:

  • Holistic planning and prioritization of infrastructure investments will allow San Diego to maintain its world-class amenities and continue to be a destination city.

  • A systematic approach facilitates the long-term stability and sustainability of the city’s asset management program.

  • An objective and transparent process provides internal and external stakeholders a clear view of what the city is investing in and why.

Re-Mobilizing Our Workforce by Changing the Bath Water, Not Throwing out the Baby

As a part of our SAP EDGE project to improve the efficiencies of our operations maintaining our well sites, assets, and unify our corrective and preventive maintenance scheduling, Chesapeake Energy deployed SAP Work Manager to our 800-plus technicians across six states in 2016. While we gained some of the benefits we hoped to achieve, we did not get everything and were questioning the value of our investment. We started down path to evaluate and pilot alternative solutions until a chance meeting at the 2018 SAP-Centric EAM with Evora helped us to understand that the issues we were experiencing were common, solvable, and we could streamline Work Manager to satisfy our users in the field. Join our session to hear the challenges we faced, the many ways we tried to solve them, and how we ultimately turned things around without excessive cost.

Key Business Benefits:

  • Reduce the number of screens by 80 percent

  • Improve the confidence of our maintenance data captured

  • Increase overall technician satisfaction

Focus on Planning/Scheduling While Optimizing the Unavoidable Unplanned Work—Keep It Simple

We all have heard the need to plan and schedule maintenance needs to ensure safe and effective work execution. We “plan” to cover this topic. However, too many maintenance and operating departments do a very poor job of tracking unplanned corrective actions to equipment. The typical argument in tracking this work is that it’s too time-consuming resulting in unnecessary downtime. This discussion will focus on tools and techniques that illustrate very simple while effective ways to capture unplanned maintenance activities.

Planning and Scheduling Enabling Digital Transformation

In times of digital transformation, maintenance organizations face a huge challenge while striving for operational excellence. Different levels of organizational maturity make it nowadays even more difficult to balance various objectives and adopt new technology. Effective and efficient planning and scheduling is the crucial step in any end-to-end maintenance process. As an integral part of SAP Intelligent Asset Management, SAP solutions for resource scheduling support organizations in their regular maintenance work as well as transformation efforts towards an intelligent predictive and prescriptive maintenance process. Asset management for resource scheduling emphasizes integration, automation, and collaboration with SAP S/4HANA® and SAP Cloud Platform to manage workload and increase asset productivity.
